Drain pineapple tidbits, reserving 1 tablespoon of juice; set aside.
In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, sugar, reserved pineapple juice and salt. Fold whipped cream into mayonnaise mixture; set aside.
In a large bowl, combine apples, celery, drained pineapple, walnuts and maraschino cherries. Stir dressing into apple mixture until combined. Cover and chill up to 8 hours until ready to serve.
To serve, if you like, line a salad bowl with lettuce leaves. Transfer the apple salad to the bowl. Makes 8 servings.
