In a medium saucepan, heat the vodka or gin over medium heat to 110 degree F. Remove saucepan from heat.
In a 2-quart glass or ceramic container, stir together warm vodka or gin and sugar. Stir until sugar dissolves. Stir in berries and/or cherries. Cover. Let stand at room temperature, stirring once a week, for 2 to 4 weeks.
Serve as a liqueur or use liqueur and berries as a topping for cakes and sundaes or in trifles. Makes 1-2/3 cups liqueur and 1-1/4 cups berries.
