Grease a 13x9x2-inch baking pan. Line with waxed paper. Set aside.
In a medium bowl, stir together flour, salt, baking powder, cinnamon, soda, and cloves.
In a large bowl, beat sugar and butter with an electric mixer until well blended. Beat in eggs, one at a time, until combined. Add flour mixture, stirring until well combined. Stir in apples, nuts, lemon peel, and vanilla. Spread mixture in the prepared pan.
Bake in a 350 degree F oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until a wooden toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Remove from oven. Cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Loosen edges from pan. Invert onto a wire rack; remove from pan. Peel off waxed paper. Cool. Invert onto a serving platter. Drizzle with Powdered Sugar Icing. Makes 24 servings.
In a small bowl, mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla. Stir in additional milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, until drizzling consistency.
