    Tomatoey Parmesan Beans

This sleeper hit of a weeknight dinner comes from Food Network star Molly Yeh's cookbook Home is Where the Eggs Are—and is basically a vehicle for Parmesan and garlic toast. No complaints! (The alternate version, with ham and cream, is excellent too.)

Cool jewel

Power colors, like a power suit, can leave a lasting impression. Emily Mitchell of The Place Home design studio in Grand Rapids, Michigan, created a custom headboard around her client's favorite emerald hue, then chose bedding and a brass lamp to complement it. The quilt delivers a knockout punch of pattern.

Small comfort

Emily Mitchell of The Place Home design studio in Grand Rapids, Michigan, says she likes to incorporate at least one darkly painted room in a home to help create a hierarchy of spaces. In this petite spare room, a spatterware pan serves as art, and lockers scored on Craigslist stand by for guest bags and coats.

In with the new

Hall bedroom
Credit: Adam Albright

Each year, Kansas City, Kansas, homeowners Jill and Kevin Hall choose one inspirational word apiece to hang above their bed. "It's good to set intentions," Jill says. In updating their 1980s house, the Halls also transplanted the dining room's brass chandelier to the master bedroom to glam up the warm leather sconces and grass cloth walls. The campaign chest nightstands were a Craigslist purchase as newlyweds; Kevin recently refinished them in glossy white.

Table talk

A four-poster adds grandeur but also the potential to dominate. So Emily Mitchell of The Place Home design studio in Grand Rapids, Michigan, mixed this room up with bright blue lamps, a velvet bench and mismatched tables (including one cloaked in a custom floral slipcover).

A space to unwind

A space to unwind

Charcoal grass-cloth walls lend cozy depth to an otherwise simple bedroom: "It's just what I need: bed, tables, lamps. For a space you're supposed to unwind in, I like that," says Michigan design editor Michelle Adams.

Quiet palette

Organic chic

The quiet palette of the master bedroom in this Indiana home gains interest from texture, design details and art. Belgian linen layers on the bed. "I love the texture of linen, the feel of linen and the sheen of linen," the homeowner says. "I even love that it wrinkles and doesn't feel perfect."

Romantic pink

A cottage-style bedroom gets a flirty, feminine update with pink beaded-board walls (Benjamin Moore #1331 Ballet Slippers). A rug and accent pillows add just the right amount of floral pattern.
