Most people think about eggs in quantities of one or two dozen. But at the Country Nest egg farm in central Iowa, 12,000 dozen is more like it. Cory and Jennifer Fehr own the farm where they live with their 8 kids--and their 240,000 hens. Making sure the chickens stay healthy is key. I think the consumer needs to realize we’re a family farm. We’re going to take care of the chicken because the happier the chicken is; the more they’re going to produce. One thing I really like about the eggs is that they are probably the cheapest form of protein and an easy, good form of protein that the consumer can buy. The farm ships approximately five to six semi-truck loads of eggs a week. Like about one-third of all eggs produced in the U.S., Country Nest eggs go to food companies that make packaged goods like bread and pasta. But at least 30 eggs a day go to the Fehr’s kitchen for baking or breakfast I don’t think any of us would say we don’t want eggs for breakfast. We enjoy our time in the morning because that’s a time when most of us are here. It’s a good family time. The Fehrs are all about family. And their farm is all about feeding yours. It just makes me feel good to know we’re providing safe food for people to eat.
