Midwest Living Review

Hearken back to yesteryear with a stay in this popular 1886 inn, a luxurious property in the heart of historic Cedarburg.

Washington House Inn is probably the city's most iconic lodging. Originally called the Washington House, it was built in 1846 on the town’s main street and was Cedarburg’s first inn. In 1886, the original building was replaced with the present cream-color brick structure, and after an incarnation as offices and apartments, it once again became an inn in 1984. Today, it features 29 rooms spread among three floors, plus five more in its annex, the Schroeder Guest House, which sits a few doors down from Washington House. Rates run $100 to $345.

The inn rooms are casually elegant and feature amenities like whirlpool baths, fireplaces and free Wi-Fi. In many rooms, the stone and brick walls are exposed. Every day, late afternoon, you'll find complimentary wine and light hors d'oeuvres set out in the spacious dining room. In the morning, the free breakfast includes items like fresh fruit, cereal, homemade muffins and scones, and a hot entree, such as baked oatmeal or egg strata. If you’re visiting when the inn is busy, it may be difficult to find an open table, however, and you may have to wait for some of the breakfast items to be replenished.

Interestingly, the dining room is pretty much the only common space in the inn. There is a spacious hall/parlor that also serves as the reception area, but it would be nice if there was a room or two for intimate gatherings. The Washington House Inn doesn’t have an exercise room, either, although guests can pay $5 for a pass to a nice local fitness club a few blocks down from the inn. Despite these minor drawbacks, the inn is lovely and definitely worth a stay.
