Midwest Living Review
The story of Tyranena began long before history was written. Legend tells of a tribe that built a series of stone structures and effigy mounds on the edge of a lake they called Tyranena. Today, these stone structures lie deep beneath the waters of Rock Lake. No one is certain who built them, the purposes they served, or how they became submerged. In fact, no one really knows what Tyranena meant. But they do know what it means now: great beer. Award-winning Tyranena Brewery is located in Lake Mills, Wisconsin (home of Rock Lake). Most people who visit try the $10 sampler, which includes 4-ounce glasses of all nine Tyranena beers plus its root beer, made with clover honey. What's especially cool is that even though food isn't served here, visitors are encouraged to bring their own -- even meat for grilling! There's live music on weekends, and guests can play board games or puzzles. Free brewery tours are offered Saturdays.
