Midwest Living Review

Five memorably charming guest rooms await for those looking to soak up a little of Wausau's impressive architectural history.

Opened in 2002 and a member of Travel Green Wisconsin, The Stewart Inn provides an interesting blend of past and present. Fine bed linens and firm new mattresses grace Arts and Crafts-replica queen and king beds. Gas fireplaces warm spacious rooms. Sparkling baths preserve the past with claw-foot tubs and porcelain hanging sinks while meeting every modern expectation for comfort (organic bath products, fluffy towels, superb steam showers). The stucco mansion was designed in the Prairie style by noted Chicago architect George Maher and completed in 1906. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was so perfectly preserved that Jane and Paul Welter faced few daunting restoration tasks when they took it over in 2001 -- just the challenge of adding modern conveniences (and luxuries like double steam showers) without spoiling the vintage ambience. Guests who love Prairie-style architecture will find this place jaw-dropping. A fused-glass fireplace features a stunning pattern of drooping wisteria vines. Most light fixtures, including the lovely tulip wall sconces, are original. The window seats over the radiators could seat 12 children in a row. If you don't know about Maher's repeating motifs (tulips, broken arches), you'll know plenty when you leave. The Welters are delighted to talk about the features and history of the house, but they also tend to launch into accolades of all Wausau has to offer, from the new Red Eye Brewery to New Roots Coffee to the nearby ginseng farms, which can get wearing. Their zealous boosterism, sometimes at the expense of simple hospitality, is the only cloud over an otherwise lovely B&B experience. Rooms from $130.
