Midwest Living Review

Maggie Ginsberg-Schutz
This beautifully renovated historic theater attracts more than 50,000 patrons every year for Broadway shows and community performances.

This charming 1,200-seat historical theater hosts a wide range of shows, including professional touring groups (big Broadway acts) and Wausau Community Theater. The 2011 season boasted performances of Stomp, Shrek the Musical, Oklahoma, Rock of Ages, Young Frankenstein, and the Flying Karamozov Brothers, as well as celebrity acts such as the Charlie Daniels Band, LeAnn Rimes and Martin Short. Ticket prices vary depending on the show and the seat.

Originally a vaudeville and silent film house, the 1927 Grand Theater saw significant renovations in 2001. For instance, an alley that once separated the original building from the 1901 Wausau Coke and Light power company is now the Great Hall entrance. The hall is stunning on show nights when visitors get to experience the full effect of the 30-foot ceiling, painted midnight blue and pinpricked with lights meant to resemble a starry sky. This is where patrons mingle at intermission over concessions from the bar and individual beer and popcorn carts, but the real showstopper is the original theater space with its rows of red velvet seats, original gilded plaster, antique aisle designators and other historic features.
