Midwest Living Review

Melanie Radzicki McManus
Enjoy some vino while listening to great tunes at this innovative urban winery.

Fine wine, fine art and great music make Studio Winery a mighty fine spot. Doug Jackson plays the role of winemaker (and also plays keyboard in a blues band); wife Kathy’s artistic works adorn the walls and bottle labels.

Studio Winery sits at the outskirts of Lake Geneva in an open, airy space. The bar and tasting area account for one end of the building; an enormous, 100-year-old grand piano in the wine lounge anchors the other end. Outside, a spacious deck invites customers to take a load off and relax with a glass of vino and BYO picnics (grills provided). On summer Saturdays, live music adds to the ambience.

Studio Winery has an acre of grapes growing on-site but most of the raw product is purchased from growers in Wisconsin and Michigan and on the West Coast. The winery offers 10 good-quality wines; visitors pay $5 to taste five wines made from Midwestern grapes (about a full glass in total) or $10 to taste four reserve wines made from West Coast grapes. Bottles sell for $14 to $48. A few craft beers are also available.
