Midwest Living Review

Relaxing views of the Mississippi River and Lake Pepin encourage travelers along the Great River Road to take a break here.

Maiden Rock may not have the readily apparent charms of say, nearby Stockholm, but this rural arts community offers some worthy stops. Along with a few rough-around-the-edges biker bars, Maiden Rock has a growing number of galleries, B&Bs and other establishments, as well as some fine picnic spots. The Maiden Rock State Natural Area preserves 250 acres atop a 400-foot bluff. A 1.5-mile hiking trail leads to the area's namesake, Maiden Rock, which takes its name from a legend about an Indian maiden who jumped to her death rather than be subjected to a forced marriage. The overlook offers sweeping view of the Mississippi; watch for the soaring peregrine falcons that often nest in the bluffs. South of town, a wayside off State-35 offers a picnic area with views of Lake Pepin.
