Gracious hospitality, attention to detail and an ideal location add up to a delightful stay at this elegant inn in Madison.

From the moment they greet their guests at the front door, the innkeepers here make people feel very special. Nary a detail is overlooked, from the manager's handwritten welcome note to fresh flowers in the bathrooms. From the fine furnishings to the marble bathrooms, no expense has been spared in restoring this 1857 German Romanesque Revival mansion. While the furnishings are traditional, the feel is updated and far from stuffy. The restoration was recently completed by the property's current owners--the company that builds TREK bicycles in a nearby town---as an upscale inn for their corporate clients. That explains the bicycle-themed artwork and photography adorning the walls, including a photograph of Lance Armstrong, who once slept here. We stayed in an exquisite room reached by a spiral staircase to the second floor. The large room featured a king bed, flat-screen TV, sofa, Internet access and a writing desk ... but we could not find the bathroom until it was revealed hidden behind a floor-to-ceiling bookcase that doubles as a door. Once you walk through the bookcase, you find a spacious marble bathroom complete with heated floor. What luxury. Back on the main floor, there's an impressive wooden bar where guests enjoy snacks and beverages, including beers on tap. This is also where a top-notch breakfast is served, complete with fresh pastries from a local bakery. Located on a wooded residential street adjacent to downtown, the inn is ideally sited for visiting some of Madison's best attractions, including the Wisconsin State Capitol. Lake Mendota is also just a skipping-stone's throw away.
