Midwest Living Review
In the aftermath of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, dozens of Chicago’s business owners, industrialists and community leaders moved to the Lake Geneva area while the city was being rebuilt. Lake Lawn Lodge on Delevan Lake, 12 miles away, opened in 1878 as a modest guesthouse serving “fifty borders and fifty horses.” Over time, owners changed as the economy and public tastes shifted, the marina expanded, accommodations “went condo” and returned to resort rooms to meet travelers' preferences. But the lure of the lake retreat never waned.
Lake Lawn Resort is charming yet another generation after a local investment group bought the resort out of bankruptcy for a reported $9.5 million, completed extensive upgrades and celebrated a grand reopening in 2011. Designers deftly applied a woodsy touch to every inch of the property: classic lodge furniture gathers around the fireplace, deer silhouettes grace light sconces, hand-painted lake scenes color bed headboards, and metal pinecones decorate bathroom mirrors. Comfort and quality prevail in 255 guest rooms with 32-inch HD flat-screen TVs, 300-count sheets, spa-style showerheads and thirsty cotton bath towels. Each room is equipped with a refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, Wi-Fi service, and an outdoor patio or balcony. A full-service day spa, Calladora, whose name means “beauty by the water,” opened in October 2012 with a menu of soothing services. Boaters tie-up at 165 slips while golfers tee off on the challenging but fair 18-hole course. The marina rents watercraft ranging from kayaks to speed boats; the activity center keeps guests moving with various bikes, balls and mini golf.
When hunger strikes, relief is close. Chef David Ross serves creative Heartland cuisine at the Frontier Restaurant; there’s traditional pub fare at the Lookout Lounge, and Starbucks lattes bridge the caffeine gap at the Isle of Capri Cafe. Lake Lawn blends the best of a traditional Wisconsin North Woods lake retreat with amenities and services expected in the Wired Nation.
Standard room rates on peak weekends range from $199 to $399.
