Midwest Living Review

Melanie Radzicki
A stone's throw from Devil's Lake State Park, this stunning inn offers killer views of Lake Wisconsin, luxe surroundings and gracious hospitality.

Dave and Trudy Holdener built this four-guestroom, adults-only inn in the woods where they used to camp A few miles from Devil's Lake State Park. Enormous windows in the rear frame amazing views of Lake Wisconsin and the Wisconsin River Valley, but that's hardly the only treasure. Trudy's father, a Bavarian master cabinetmaker, meticulously crafted most of the home's woodwork with help from Dave's brother.

Rooms ($219-$279) are sumptuous, and it's clear the Holdeners pay close attention to details. In addition to soft bedding, fine toiletries and flat-screen TVs, there are extra outlets for charging high-tech gadgets and labeled switches for all the lights. Each morning, guests enjoy a full breakfast (make sure to taste Trudy’s homemade granola) in the dining room or on the back deck.

Guests have the run of the house, which includes spacious living and dining rooms, a bar (wine and cheese are served nightly), an exercise area, sauna and outdoor hot tub. During warm months, stroll marked paths through the 42 acres, in winter snowshoe. Dave leaves a bottle of blackberry brandy and shot glasses along the main trail in case you need a little extra warmth.
