Midwest Living Review

Lisa Meyers McClintick
This reasonably priced Victorian inn overlooks the Mississippi and Lock and Dam No. 4, but nights can be noisy because of the train.

Ornate Victorian describes the suites in this inn, a collection of three homes dating from 1867. The main suite rooms (from $95 to $140/night) are spacious and opulent, with velvet drapes, fainting couches and the like. They have private baths and views of the river, as well as flat-screen TVs and other modern amenities. Light sleepers, though, should be aware that trains rumble past the hotel frequently. The inn also offers four smaller rooms with shared bath starting at $65/night, a bargain in this area. Owners Jeff Shilts and Dan Kordiak came to Alma from Minneapolis in 2005 and started buying old buildings and converting them into shops and restaurants. They also restored and operate the Fire and Ice Coffee and Ice Cream Shop and created its lovely European garden.
