Midwest Living Review
A good bar with decent food and a great atmosphere, Hering's Sand Bar and Grill on Sandy Beach is a perfect spot to kick back on Rock Lake in Lake Mills, Wisconsin. The outdoor patio, sunset views and fun mixed drinks draw a diverse crowd of locals and tourists, and the menu is equally varied. The Friday fish fry ($8.79) is supposed to be the best in the area, but you can also order a variety of sandwiches, steaks and drinks, including prime rib, deep-fried green beans, Cajun gator bites, bottle caps (deep-fried jalapeno slices) and a bucket of margaritas. The owner's homemade pies tempt many, and an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet ($8.99) is popular on Sundays. We highly recommend the mango daiquiri -- not too sweet and topped with whipped cream and a fake flower. Incredibly, the Sand Bar is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Sarah and Jon Hering have owned it for 18 years. It's a fun place, with theme parties held throughout the year, including a luau, pirates party on Labor Day, prom king and queen party, Abba disco party, and Halloween party. The Herings also own the bait shop across the way, where they rent boats and sell goodies to beachgoers.
