Midwest Living Review

Josh Wimmer
Get your cherry fix at this Door County institution, where you'll find cherry jam, cherry pie, cherry barbecue sauce and more.

When it opened in 1950, this was Ray's Cherry Hut, one of the first roadside markets in Door County. Since 2008, it's been owned by the Pollman family (who also operate the Door Peninsula Winery down the road, as well as some other local mainstays) and dubbed simply The Cherry Hut. Less a hut than a long houselike store, this is your stop for all things cherry in Door County. The inside isn't much to look at -- the floor is unpainted poured concrete, the walls are white, and the lighting is fluorescent -- but the shop certainly delivers a wide array of cherry-related goods. They've got cherry jam, cherry pie filling, cherry salsa, cherry barbecue sauce, cherry coffee, fresh cherries (of the Door County and Montmorency varieties), and cherry wines, among other things. There are plenty of samples out on the floor, too, which sets The Cherry Hut apart from other area stores. There are also free tastings of Door Peninsula and other area wines (in a much less comfortable environment than the winery down the road, but the line is likely a bit shorter than at the winery's bar). If you're cherry-crazy and on Highway 42, this store is worth a stop.
