Midwest Living Review

Lisa Meyers McClintick
An extensive array of wines, pretty countryside vineyards and live music on the patio make Simon Creek a great destination.

Simon Creek is often named as a favorite among Door County's 10 wineries. With vineyards tucked into a scenic country location, it courts both wine purists and those who favor fruit wines. The great wine and lovely setting make an irresistible combination, especially for anyone lucky enough to be there on a balmy Sunday afternoon when there is live music on the sprawling back patio. Purchase cheese and crackers to go with your bottle of wine, or bring your own snacks, then just sit back and relax. With its climate tempered by the lake, Simon Creek grows about 20 grape varieties, mostly French-American hybrids. Take your time mulling over the four reds, five whites and six fruit wines and spirits. Among the standouts: semisweet Untouchable Red, named for Al Capone's attempt to buy Simon Creek farm for his bootleg empire; American Viognier, for its hints of lime and grapefruit; and Door County Cherry, a double-gold winner at the American Wine Society. You can taste up to four samples for free, and there's also a free tour of the winery. Wines by the glass are $6; bottles start at $12.
