Midwest Living Review

Trevor Meers
Beautiful hikes and overlooks await in a park just 10 minutes outside Sturgeon Bay.

Nobody struggles to find scenic spots in Door County. But that wealth of lovely areas means there are plenty of excellent outdoor discoveries still awaiting even longtime visitors. Potawatomi State Park at the southern end of the county near Sturgeon Bay is one of those. The park’s 1,200 acres include miles of forest hiking trails rich with details that reward photographers or simply attentive hikers. The moss-covered limestone emerging from every hillside is particularly eye-catching. Wisconsin’s famed Ice Age Trail has one of its endpoints here, and a lookout tower rises above the trees to provide sweeping looks at the waters of Sturgeon Bay, Green Bay and the surrounding Door Peninsula. The park includes more than 120 campsites, which are near a shoreline covered with rounded stones ideal for skipping off the bay’s surface.
