Midwest Living Review

Lisa Meyers McClintick
Anything goes at this walk-in art studio, where staffers guide visitors through widely varied lessons, such as making glass pendants and welding garden sculptures.

It used to take a rainy day to inspire summer tourists to leave the beaches. Now they head to this vibrant barn and its outbuildings year-round, no matter what the weather, for hands-on art lessons. For a $7 studio fee plus project costs, would-be artists can learn to glaze pottery, paint, fuse glass, make jewelry and mosaics, and weld metal. The business keeps expanding its offerings, adding buildings to accommodate more work space. It's an ideal place to make one-of-a-kind home decor items such as pottery switchplates and bowls, mosaic mirrors and metal sculptures. A new machine fuses together custom cabinet-size works of art glass. Kids enjoy the chance to get messy at the pottery wheel modified to create spirals of paint on canvas and T-shirts. Artists too engrossed to leave when stomachs grumble can find soda, popcorn, pizza and snacks in the lower level of the barn. Be sure to check out the silo colorfully decorated in tiles created by visitors.
