Short trails from the parking lot let virtually anyone walk the striking Lake Michigan rock ledges made famous in untold paintings by Door County artists.
It’s not easy to name the most beautiful spot in Door County, but Cave Point County Park certainly has a claim to the title. The park on the peninsula’s eastern side features limestone ledges along the lake—most of them accessible to virtually anyone who can walk a short distance. Some of the ledges rise 30 or 40 feet above the waves, with small trees sprouting from the cracks. In other spots, the limestone provides a broad avenue at the water level, creating a wonderland of shallow pools to explore and an endless supply of flat rocks that people love to stack in artistic cairns. For an easy double-header, visit Whitefish Dunes State Park immediately next door, where sweeping sand beaches front the lake.
