Midwest Living Review

Even in the quiet season, the cheerful, artsy decor and affordable, creative meals keep this place bustling.

Don't let the ho-hum exterior of this cafe north of Egg Harbor fool you. The inside hums with vibrant local artwork, cheerful yellow walls and well-lit rooms filled with diners who come for affordable prices and fresh twists on menu classics. Try the French pocket toast stuffed with ricotta, cream cheese, Monterey Jack cheese and apricot preserves, then rolled in granola. Juicy burgers come with a heaping side of thick, crunchy homemade potato chips. Fish chowder has a kick to it, served Bahamian style in a tomato broth. The best-selling sandwich rolls together smoked turkey, tangy Door County cherries, Monterey Jack cheese and a zippy honey-mustard dressing in a tortilla. Locals know to leave room for the cafe's famous carrot cake or a slice of cherry or Toll House pie. Our favorite to-go item? Bags of skorpa, their generously buttered, chewy, crispy slices of twice-baked cinnamon twists.
