Midwest Living Review

Josh Wimmer
A heaven for pie lovers, where each dessert is carefully crafted by hand and there are dozens of flavors.

Here is what a home-baked pie ought to be: made entirely by hand, full of the freshest possible ingredients, held in a flaky but moist crust that's sweet but not saccharine and just barely salty. That's what you'll find at Sweetie Pies, and you'll find a lot of them. Sweetie Pies makes more than 400 pies a week during the tourist season and has no trouble moving them. For their fruit pies, they don't use any fake fillings -- they just put fresh fruit in a crust -- and every single dessert is done entirely by hand, from start to finish. Flavors range from cherry, the most popular -- this is Door County, after all -- to Berried Treasure (blackberries, blueberries and strawberries) and Three Berry (black, blue and raspberry), as well as chocolate pecan, apple caramel, chocolate chip cookie and dozens more. Prices range from $14 to $25, depending on the pie. Order ahead, or just walk in and get a slice baked fresh that day for $5. (A scoop of vanilla is just $1 extra.) Folks who want a whole pie, but not a large one, can check out the Cutie Pies -- 5-inch mini versions for $9. Oh, and be sure to try a crust cookie while you're there. Sweetie Pies has become so popular with regular visitors to Door County since it opened in 1995 that it makes an annual road trip to Milwaukee and Chicago, trucking loads of frozen pies to those cities, so fans can take home Sweetie Pies for the holidays. Check their website for the exact dates (usually in November, shortly before Thanksgiving).
