Midwest Living Review

Maureen Blaney Flietner
This bucolic adults-only retreat is just far enough from the Door County hustle and bustle to allow you to relax in rural serenity.

Door County does not lack in its variety of lodging options, but ones that offer privacy for adults and room to roam in a country setting are rare. The Chanticleer Guest House Bed and Breakfast, on 70 acres a half mile north of Sturgeon Bay, does just that. Distinctive suites, comfortably accented with antiques, have been crafted into the 1915 barn and farmhouse. Four cabins sheltered in the woods across the road offer additional lodging options. Between the barn and farmhouse are an attractive sauna and heated pool. Stresses seem to evaporate as you view the grazing sheep, flower gardens and woods. Balconies in the rooms offer sweeping pastoral views, or you can hike the trail or walk the wooded path passing near the cabins. A small private pond attracts wildlife (if the darling lambs aren't enough!). It's worth noting, though, that as much as we loved the setting at Chanticleer, the service left something to be desired. We never met the owners, and we had to phone a receptionist upon arrival to come greet us. Breakfast is delivered to rooms, which is a nice private touch, but it's nothing special -- just ordinary muffins, yogurt, coffee and juice. No one gave us a tour or told us about the trails. While we appreciated the privacy, a warmer sense of hospitality (and better muffin recipes) would go a long way to making this a truly standout B&B experience. The Chanticleer is open year-round, with high season May 14 to October 31. A two-night minimum stay is required on weekends, three nights on some holidays. Rates range from $140 to $400 a night.
