Red Steakhouse

Red Steakhouse, opened in 2011, adds elegance to Vermillion's dining scene. Located in the old First National Bank and Trust building, the beautiful surroundings enhance a fantastic meal. The atmosphere is upscale, but it's not unusual to find diners in blue jeans or khakis. There is a bar and dining on the main floor and dining space on a high-ceilinged mezzanine. Keeping with the bank history, the basement vault remains, but it's home to a well-stocked wine cellar. The menu is a traditional mix of steaks, seafood and pastas. A cup of the signature shrimp and clam chowder soup ($4.99) featured plenty of meat and a rich, creamy texture. The evening's house special, an 8-ounce top sirloin topped with a fillet of salmon and a tomato-pesto sauce ($25.99), was delicious. The salmon was flaky and fresh, the steak was tender, and the tomato-pesto sauce complemented both. A plate of angel hair pasta with chicken scaloppini Parmesan ($15.99) tasted fantastic at first bite, but in the end proved too rich. For dessert, chocolate creme brulee ($4.99) proved decadent and perfect for sharing. For the area, the prices are somewhat steep, but they're justified by the food and setting. For a special-occasion dinner or an upscale date night, Red Steakhouse is a worthwhile destination.
