Midwest Living Review

The Old Market Street Cafe serves up huge portions of homestyle cookin'. It's not fancy, but it's tasty.

The Old Market Street Cafe's sign reads Just Good Food, No Foo-Foo. That pretty much sums up this local greasy spoon, where the food is hearty and plentiful and the owners know their regulars' orders by heart. Once we sat down, our waitress brought our menus in one hand and the coffee pot in the other. We liked this touch -- she knew her standard morning customer and was armed and ready to pour. The owner, Gary Monk is a lovable gruff. He decorates his cafe in a way the locals and the college students can understand: The south side of the restaurant has all Nebraska paraphernalia on the walls, and the north side has University of South Dakota items. All fun conversation pieces regardless of where your allegiance lies. The biscuits and gravy ($5.25) featured soft, flaky biscuits and well-seasoned, flavorful gravy. The Good God Almighty Hash browns ($8.75; described as "all the leftovers in the fridge plus hash browns") had assorted veggies, bacon and some of the same sausage gravy that appeared on the biscuits. The sausage -- purchased from a local meat locker -- was tasty in both meals. We left feeling over-full and over-salted, but also happily remembering the type of breakfast our mothers and grandmothers made.
