Midwest Living Review
Architect Frank Lloyd Wright once declared Spearfish Canyon the most beautiful he'd ever seen--and he'd been to the Grand Canyon. The canyon's sheer rock walls and numerous waterfalls certainly make it a signature drive for every Black Hills visitor. To get the most from the experience, stay at Spearfish Canyon Lodge, which sits at Roughlock Falls about halfway through the scenic drive. The year-round resort is styled in classic mountain style with a soaring lobby anchored by a stone fireplace and mounts of bison and other animals. The 54 rooms and suites are essentially motel-style rooms with a lodge theme. Across the road, right by the falls, is the Latchstring Restaurant, which serves outstanding trout dishes. Be sure to get a seat on the back deck overlooking the canyon. The lodge provides easy access to hiking trails, trout fishing and the Black Hills' seemingly never-ending network of snowmobile trails. The lodge rents snowmobiles. Just up Little Spearfish Canyon from the lodge is the filming site of one of the final scenes in Kevin Costner's "Dances with Wolves."
