Midwest Living Review
De Smet can be thin on dining, especially if you're staying more than one night. One of the popular options for locals is a nine-mile drive east on Highway 14 (the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Highway) to nearby Lake Preston. The Four Lakes Supper Club has a drive-through for picking up beer and other alcohol, as well as a bar with pool tables, but it also has a dining area. It's fairly sparse as far as atmosphere goes, but the menu has more options than most area restaurants. Look for shrimp over pasta with a cream sauce, grilled walleye, top sirloin steak, hickory-smoked ribs with garlic mashed potatoes or sweet potato chips, or more casual items such as a loaded-up Philly steak sandwich or deep-fried pickles. The salad bar isn't open on Monday, and side salads look as barren as the prairie with only iceberg lettuce and shredded cheese.
