Midwest Living Review

This new 28-person cabin offers a luxurious option for family get-togethers in Custer State Park.

Custer State Park unveiled a top-of-the-line reunion cabin near the historic State Game Lodge in July 2010. The big kitchen and great room are a natural gathering place. The dining room table, made with huge pine planks slathered in poly, seats about 18, and there's room for five at the kitchen bar. The decorators did an awesome job in choosing textured, rich fabrics, accents and even a cool tabletop bison sculpture. Bedroom suites flank each side of the great room, and a loft is packed with bunks for kids. All rooms had king beds, but were each slightly different. One would have a Jacuzzi while another had well-stocked bookshelves. Some rooms are even handicapped-accessible. A sizable deck with a grill overlooks Coolidge Creek. There's also a fire pit for campfires. Watch for deer, bison and an occasional bighorn sheep to wander through the yard. The Peter Norbeck Visitor Center is visible from the cabin, and guests can easily stroll to short trails, take a longer Lover's Leap hike, hop onto the park's scenic byways or cast a line behind the cottage. The cabin offers a fresh alternative to the older cabins that could accommodate up to 16 people. The cottage rents for $795/night and books years in advance. Be prepared to be patient for an opening and plan far ahead.
