Midwest Living Review

Cynthia Earhart
Featuring artful arrangements of colorful yarns and all manner of knitting needles, Wisp is a knitter's Nirvana.

The dictionary defines "wisp" as: 1. something that is thin and delicate like thread; 2. something that is thin, frail or slight; and 3. a fleeting trace or indication; a hint. That means this tiny store, decorated corner-to-corner with a rainbow of bundled yarns hinting at the delicate sweaters and scarves yet to be made, was aptly named. The owner, a former fashion designer, has created a serene space where knitters of all ages and genders come to peruse pattern books, browse the yarn offerings, and swap ideas and techniques. Some even stop by just to sit and knit and chat awhile. Colorful yarn graces every inch of the bright, sunny shop, and knitting needles sprout like blooming plants from pretty pots on a table by the door. Open only since November 2010, there are plans for classes, an interactive website and selling items made by local yarn crafters. For now, however, it's worth stopping in just to see how skeins of yarn can turn a slight space into a fashionable, if wispy, boutique.
