Midwest Living Review

Damaine Vonada
The Welshfield Inn is worth the trip for country dining.

With a fire dancing in its stone fireplace and oil lamps casting a cozy glow on every table, you won't find a more inviting place to dine than the Welshfield Inn's Fireplace Room. Located in the Geauga County countryside about 40 miles east of Cleveland, the inn has been extending hospitality since the 1840s, when it was a busy stagecoach stop in a little crossroads community called Welshfield. Today, the Welshfield Inn is a local landmark as well as a destination restaurant whose Early American decor handsomely reflects its unique heritage and provides a gracious atmosphere for dining. Meals at the Welshfield Inn begin with breadbasket containing the signature mini cinnamon rolls, and the menu nicely balances comfort foods with more contemporary cuisine. You can choose from updated American favorites like lobster macaroni and cheese ($21.99) or tomato-glazed meat loaf ($18.49) as well as more sophisticated entrees such as chicken piccata with wild rice ($16.49) and fire-grilled mahimahi accompanied by wasabi mashed potatoes ($18.99). Portions are large. The Ohio City Pasta Pierogies, an appetizer that gives a nod to Cleveland's considerable east European population, consists of a flavorful beef ragout over potato filled pierogies and is a meal in itself.
