Midwest Living Review

This giant thrill-seeker's peninsula boasts 16 roller coasters as well as plenty of tamer rides, lively shows and other attractions.

Cedar Point is nirvana for roller coaster enthusiasts. The 365-acre park—which juts out into Lake Erie on its own peninsula—boasts 16 coasters, from the mild Cedar Creek Mine Ride to the 420-foot-tall Top Thrill Dragster, the world’s second tallest coaster with speeds reaching 120 miles per hour. No matter where you point a camera, there will always be a coaster in the background, but there’s a whole lot more to love here. Namely, hundreds of other attractions including carnival games, rides, a colorful water park and an explosive evening light/fireworks show called Luminosity. Little ones can enjoy their own designated playgrounds with two mini-midways of pint-sized rides and attractions.

Every year, Cedar Point unveils a new addition to great fanfare. In 2013, the buzz swirls around the upcoming GateKeeper, the tallest, longest and fastest winged coaster in the world. The design allows riders to sit on either side of the track with nothing above or below them, creating a flying sensation as cars dive into loops and twists at up to 67 miles per hour. The most thrilling moment comes when the coaster flips through narrow openings in two towers located above the front gate (hence the name).

Daily shows take in country music, Broadway reviews and extreme BMX bikes. Though overpriced, the food maintains a slightly higher standard than at other amusement parks (try the thick-cut fries and the crispy elephant ears). It’s easy to spend an additional day exploring Soak City Waterpark’s slides, wave pools and lazy river. Overall, Cedar Point is impeccably clean with sparkling infrastructure and friendly employees. It’s no wonder that Amusement Today has voted this “The Best Amusement Park in the World” for 15 years running.
