Midwest Living Review

You'll need a car wash after wild animals slobber all over your vehicle at this drive-through safari.

A combination zoo/wildlife viewing area, this park offers up-close encounters with a variety of domesticated and wild animals. And when we say up-close, we mean sticking-their-heads-in-your-vehicle close.

The drive-through safari begins at a gated area where an employee takes your ticket and gives you a cup of dry food pellets with instructions like "If they take the entire cup, let them have it. Don't try to get it back from them." We took this lesson to heart at the end of our 20-minute cruise when a guanaco (imagine a super-size llama) stuck its head into our vehicle and ripped the cup right out of our hands as we were feeding some young deer. Elsewhere along the way, we found ourselves surrounded by herds of deer, llama and alpaca who seemed excited to see a car on a relatively slow day. Car equals food to these creatures, which can become a bit hazardous at times. Let's just say that these animals do not react quickly to slow acceleration and power windows. Caution is essential, but as long as guests heed warnings and proceed carefully, this drive-through adventure can be a hilarious once-in-a-lifetime experience.

An on-site walk-through safari provides a calmer, zoo-like atmosphere with plenty of unique wildlife including warthogs, ocelots, giant porcupines and a rare white alligator. The park also offers free educational shows and camel rides for a nominal charge. Peak season admission is $21.95 for adults and $12.95 for children ages 4 to 6, and covers both the drive-through and walk-through safari attractions. Hours vary by season; check the web site or call ahead for details.
