Midwest Living Review

Damaine Vonada
The Ohio Herb Education Center is an exceptional place to learn about herbs and shop for herbal products.

Catering to a blossoming interest in growing things, the Ohio Herb Education Center is an ideal place to learn about herbs.  Not only is the center located in Gahanna, a Columbus suburb that has been the official “Herb Capital of Ohio” since the 1970s, but it also occupies an inviting Victorian home with wicker furniture on the porch, a classic kitchen garden outside and bundles of dried herbs hanging in the homey kitchen.  With its bay window and fireplace, the center’s parlor provides a pretty setting for teas and other herbal events, and the gift shop stocks locally made packets of seasonings, herbal condiments, herb-related artwork, and an exclusive product line—the Herbal Surrender soaps, lotions and candles ($6 and up) that feature rosemary, Gahanna’s signature herb.

As a prime destination on Gahanna’s Herbal Trail, the center offers herb garden tours ($3), inexpensive craft classes ($3-$5) and experiential workshops (from $12) that teach everything from how to grow herbs to tying bouquet garni for cooking to creating natural cleaning products. Although visitors are welcome, the center has limited hours. Anyone wanting to learn about aromatherapy or how to make herbal bath and beauty items should call ahead or check the website.
