Midwest Living Review

Sip California-style wines in this urban wine cellar in the heart of Mansfield's historic Carrousel District.

Cypress Hill Winery is a working winery nearly hidden in the basement of one of the city's favorite bars, the City Grille. Guests are served in the same space where the wines are crafted. The exposed brick walls and original foundation floor give the tiny cellar a grotto feel. The hearty selection of California-style reds and whites don't taste like hobby wine (although that's how the operation got its start 15 years ago). It's not your typical mid-Ohio fruity wine either. Cypress Hill uses grapes imported from California to make traditional varietals, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Shiraz, Riesling and Chardonnay. Tastings are available and encouraged. Most bottles are $16 (the dessert wines are more expensive), and most glasses are $6. The tasting room is small and fills quickly. If things get too cozy, head outside to the festive patio. The winery doesn't have a menu of its own, but guests can order from a limited version of the City Grille's menu. The cheese plate ($12) is a popular snack, as are the crunchy, crispy fried pickles ($5). Pleasant service, an intimate atmosphere and solid wine choices make Cypress Hill Winery a sophisticated spot to unwind in the Carrousel District.
