Kussmaul Gallery

Part art gallery (upstairs) and part "bohemian boutique" (downstairs), the Kussmaul Gallery is a bright, spacious storefront occupying a major corner in downtown Granville. In the second-floor gallery space, recently renovated by owner and artist James Young, the rough-hewn plank floor, exposed brick walls and heavy timber beams are the perfect stage for James' evocative paintings of austere barns and desolate landscapes. (Prices for his original works start around $500.) James delights in telling visitors how he once was employed by the printing company that inhabited the building he now owns and has lovingly restored. The retail space on the first floor also makes great use of the wooden floors and brick walls as a backdrop to the cleverly displayed merchandise. Expansive windows create a sunny space where the hand-blown glass tumblers sparkle and the brightly hued handmade rugs provide a pop of color. Unusual children's and baby gifts have their own section, as do hand-crafted stationery and journals, jewelry, unique ceramic dishware, and fabric handbags and totes.
