Midwest Living Review
House Wine is both a retail wine store and a wine bar. It offers a twist though: You can sample the wine before you buy, in one, three, or five-ounce tastings, thanks to a computerized tasting bar (you purchase prepaid cards to use it). Owner Donnie Austin and his staff hand-select the wines to feature each week, which always includes eight whites and 16 reds. Customers can also open any bottle in the shop for a $5 corkage fee (or you can buy a bottle and enjoy it right there). Austin has worked hard to make the atmosphere feel modern and fun, but not pretentious. His philosophy is that wine should be fun, not intimidating. The orange and green decor is snazzy and contemporary. Signage is clear-cut and organized by food pairings to help patrons who just want a bottle for dinner. House Wine partners with its neighbor, The Candle Lab, to do events (like make your own candle and have a wine party while you wait for the candle to set).
