It's a water-play paradise for the under-12 set at the woodsy-styled Great Wolf Lodge in Mason--and Kings Island amusement park is right next door.

Watching kids' faces the first time they walk into the giant log cabin that is the Great Wolf Lodge is a parental treat--and one reason why this kid-pleasing indoor water park is such a hit with young families. Towering wolf statues act as entrance sentries. Blue and green water slides twist in and out of the building exterior. Roller coasters from the adjacent Kings Island amusement park run at the property's edge. This is a mecca of man-made fun. Booking a "wolf den" guest room provides kids a bunk-bed faux cabin and a television all to themselves. Details like the cabin's Man in the Moon light fixture and singing wolf family mural are truly charming. The water park will delight kids ages 12 and younger. Even teens with younger siblings will find enough adventure in the more thrilling water slides, like the speedy Triple Twist and the slide/coaster combo the Hydroplunge. Fans of gentler, whole-family rides will enjoy the River Canyon Run. Water park staples include slides for all age levels, water cannons (Watch out Mom!), a lazy river, a wave pool, an outdoor pool and a water basketball area. Parents can take precious breaks at a hot tub and bar area just for them. Watchful lifeguards patrol each water feature. The down sides? The rooms feel a little worn. Parents let their kids run up and down the hallways until very late at night, so getting little ones to sleep can be tricky. It also can be easy to overspend here, with the kids and adults spas, MagiQuest interactive game, arcade and stuffed animal machines. The most affordable in-lodge dining options include breakfast sandwiches (rather than the pricey buffet) and pizza.
