Midwest Living Review

At The Thurman Cafe, you may have to wait for 2 hours for a table, but the famous Thurman Burger is worth it.

While the Thurman Burger, and its big-brother-on-steroids, the Thurmanator, may be featured on the Travel Channel and in top 10 burger lists nationwide, is it worth the two hour wait to get in? Heck, yeah! Burger fans from coast to coast line up for the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink, 3/4-pound Thurman Burger, topped with sliced ham, sauteed mushrooms and onions, mozzarella and American cheese, shredded lettuce, tomato, pickle, banana peppers and mayo. The behemoth burger requires some maneuvering to master the first bite, but once bitten, prepare for symbiotic perfection! (Thurman Burger is $9.99; the Thurmanator with two 12-ounce burgers and the same toppings is $16.49.) We also sampled a most-delicious turkey and Swiss on rye ($6.49). A German Village fixture since 1942, every surface of wall space in this small restaurant/bar is covered with stuff like beer signs, bumper stickers and signed dollar bills, making for a funky but fun atmosphere. The servers are energetic pros, and the clientele range from office workers and softball teams to families with children. In addition to burgers and deli sandwiches, the menu offers wings, subs, coney dogs and pizza thins, all at reasonable prices (the Thurmanator is by far the most expensive thing on the menu). A decent selection of beers is available, including the local Columbus Brewing Company's IPA and Sam Adams seasonals.
