Midwest Living Review

Finding the off-the-beaten-path Columbus Brewing Company is worth the effort for excellent hand-crafted beers and tasty food.

You won't stumble across the Columbus Brewing Company, but seeking it out is worth the effort. Located between the south end of downtown Columbus and the Scioto River in an area known as the Brewery District (look for the curved antennalike structure sprouting from the roof), this brew pub takes its food as seriously as its beer. The CBC attracts the downtown crowd and serious beer lovers who flock here for popular dishes like pizzas (the pepperoni comes loaded with herb-roasted roma tomatoes, crimini mushrooms, four peppers and fresh oregano for $12.95), buttermilk fried chicken ($15.95), the pulled-pork sandwich (smothered with pale ale Key lime BBQ sauce for $9.25) and a French onion soup that uses four types of onions ($5.50). This is comfort food done with finesse. And the beer, brewed on-site, has a reputation as some of the best in Ohio. Known for their pale ale (which is bottled and sold in local stores), the seasonals also are inventive and worth a try. We sampled the Helles Belles, a blonde lager with earthy yet crisp notes, and the assertively caramel-malt-flavored Winter Stout (from $4.50 a pint). The decor is bright and contemporary, and the patio is the summer spot to view the Columbus skyline after dark.
