Midwest Living Review

This painted lady offers guests a quintessential B&B experience with a hefty dose of history thrown in.

This stately 21-room Victorian mansion overlooks the quiet town of Cambridge, Ohio. It's named for the original owner and builder, Civil War officer and four-term U.S. Representative Joseph D. Taylor. Taylor's mansion has been lovingly restored by innkeepers Jim and Patricia Irvin, and thanks to their eye for detail, it's not hard to imagine the days when Col. Taylor and his family entertained friends and prominent political colleagues, including presidents Hayes, Garfield and McKinley. There are four guest rooms, named Iris, Lilac, Rose and Magnolia for their flower decor. The rooms all have a queen-size four-poster, a working fireplace, sitting area and private bath. Guests will appreciate the soft sheets, sturdy mattresses and extra pillows that make for a restful night's sleep. Plush robes and top-shelf soaps and lotions add a spa feel to your stay. This air of Victorian luxury spills out of the bedrooms and into the rest of the house, where every room boasts the details that made Taylor's house a palace in its time. Finely carved woodwork, ornate plaster ceiling medallions and original stained glass all point to the inn's status as a stately historical home. Guests are encouraged to explore and enjoy the first floor's two sitting rooms (one with a large TV), the library-turned-gift shop and each of the three outdoor porches. Meals are served in the formal dining room in true Victorian style, with fine china and crystal and often by candlelight. The kitchen and butler's pantry are off limits as are the Irvin's living quarters on the third floor. While there are plenty of antiques throughout the inn, comfort is never sacrificed for authenticity: there is central air and Wi-Fi.The Colonel Taylor Inn offers complimentary afternoon snacks and tea for guests. Dinner is available with reservations. Jim does the cooking, and breakfast is his forte. Wake up to apple French toast, vegetable souffle, stuffed French toast, sausage-egg casserole or quiche; Canadian bacon, ham or sausage; banana nut bread, muffins or sour cream coffee cake; and fresh fruit. If you appreciate the personal attention that comes with a smaller B&B experience, you'll find that the Irvins set the standard. From $135.
