Midwest Living Review

Pedal around Cleveland's neighborhoods while Anne and Joe, an energetic young couple with a true passion for the city, provide the entertainment.

Beautiful views, easy navigation and knowledgeable guides—it’s everything you could ask for in a city bike tour, and Cleveland Bike Tours has it all. Recently married couple Anne and Joe teamed up to start the Great Lakes Tour Company, but they’re better known as the Cleveland Bike Tour guides. And what fun guides they are.

We took the downtown tour ($40), but the couple also offers excursions around Historic Ohio City (their most popular offering) and the artsy University Circle neighborhood. Anne leads the way, incessantly ringing her bell at crosswalks and intersections for safety, and Joe brings up the rear, making sure there are no wayward or distracted bikers. Stops along the two-hour downtown tour include the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Playhouse Square, Erie Street Cemetery, Progressive Field and a whole lot more. At each attraction, Anne whips out a notebook full of fun historical facts, delivering each tidbit with all the passion of an evangelist on a soapbox. This is her hometown and she’s proud of it, but she also doesn’t sugarcoat the fact that downtown Cleveland is a district on the rebound. “Cleveland is finally getting her act together,” Anne says, referring to the hundreds of millions of dollars being pumped into downtown development. Quieter, but equally enthusiastic, Joe chimes in from time to time with more trivia about each stop. And both of them love to answer questions along the way.

Tour times and locations vary; check the web site for a schedule. Customized tours are also available on request.
