Midwest Living Review

Amber Matheson and Sarah Routh
Fire's retro-fitted burger tastes like a juicy blast from the homestead past, and it's just one of the fabulous dishes you'll find at this east side staple.

Sometimes you need a restaurant you can count on, somewhere that makes dinner better than you ever could, that surprises you when you're in the mood, and that turns out familiar favorites, too. For the countless Clevelanders who are absolutely devoted to the Shaker Square eatery, Fire is that restaurant. Chef-owner Doug Katz has been turning out locally sourced fine dining for more than a decade -- he's a seasoned pro on the sustainable landscape. The menu celebrates modern classics, comfort food really, reimagined and made with local ingredients. The Miller Farm Grassfed Beef Cheeseburger, for example, isn't just a side note for picky eaters on a moderately challenging menu; it's a carefully crafted masterpiece, oozing with juice, topped with tomato relish, mustard aioli and a plump pickle. Crispy garlic fries with parsley, chives and tarragon earn a solid 10 on both the the smell- and taste-o-meter. Pizzas made in the wood-fired oven are excellent starters, pastas are solid and the seasonal vegetarian dish is always yummy. If you're feeling a little more adventurous, try the duck confit; with its mystery hint of something sweet, it could easily convert even the staunchest duck critic. The restaurant is sleek and snappy-casual (think white tablecloths, server-ground pepper and exposed air ducts), and it draws a similar crowd. This is the kind of crowd that doesn't really mind that Fire is on the spendy side (entrees are $25-$30). They know that the quality of the food can sustain these prices. Complimentary valet parking, generous portions and delicious free chocolate chip cookies help temper the shock of the bill.
