Midwest Living Review

Fat Cats in Tremont is an old favorite serving elegant but unpretentious dishes that somehow always feel new.

Fat Cats has been around long enough (14 years) to become a Cleveland culinary classic. A creative but consistent menu, impeccable service and staggering views of downtown make this neighborhood restaurant a citywide favorite. Fat Cats serves mostly updated classics (sometimes with an Italian twist) on a menu that has so many good choices it seems hard-to-believe. If you really can't decide, try the chicken and olives ($17), a rich, salty concoction with lemon and smashed potatoes that tastes so good that you'll wish you were in the privacy of your kitchen, rather than in a restaurant where basic decorum requires silverware and napkins and breathing between bites. Handmade pizzas are outstanding and just the right size for sharing. Many ingredients come from the kitchen's adjacent garden (look for details like fresh mint garnishes or hand-picked lettuce), and most of the others come from local sources. If you know Tremont, you'll know that Fat Cats fits right in. With its bold colors, funky accents and original 19th-century architecture, Fat Cats is that combination of historic elements and eclectic details that defines this neighborhood. Pair this atmosphere with stunning views of the city skyline, from nearly any indoor or patio seat, and you've got a true Cleveland original. Prices at Fat Cats ($15-$20 entrees) feel like a bargain compared to similar spots.
