Midwest Living Review

Sarah Routh
This on-campus eatery ditches cafeteria food for upscale bistro fare.

This campus eatery is housed in the administration building of Cleveland State University, but it isn't a cafeteria or an undergrad hangout. Instead this lunch spot caters to a professors-who-lunch crowd. In fact, it's only open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Lots of sleek wood, neat geometric prints and shiny granite make for a corporate ambience at Elements. Even so, the dress code and the prices are casual. The menu at Elements is sophisticated bistro fare -- salads, soups, pasta and sandwiches along with some local favorites like pierogies. Much of the food is locally sourced. You can either have Elements make you a burger their way or you can build your own. The house version ($8.50), the Elements burger, is made with ground sirloin, Amish cheddar, crispy fried onions, house-made pickle chip and garlic aioli on a Kaiser roll. It's moist and tasty but also more complex than a typical burger. The pickle chips lend a certain sweetness to the sandwich that could turn some diners off. Burgers and sandwiches come with a side or you can purchase an extra for $2.50. Options include a fruit cup, mustard potato salad, bistro fries and sweet potato fries, among others. The hand-cut sweet potato fries are excellent. They're crispy without being over-cooked (hard to do with sweet potato fries) and perfectly seasoned with just a hint of sweetness balancing the saltiness. Elements offers an hour's worth of free parking in the nearby Prospect Avenue garage.
