Midwest Living Review

Kendra Williams
Renovated in 2010, this 31-year-old lodging shatters airport hotel stereotypes with sleek rooms, a fun lobby and an outstanding restaurant.

When we arrived at the Marriott, we'd had about as long of a travel day as a business traveler does. Up before dawn, meetings all day, evening rush to the airport, delay for the connecting flight at O'Hare, oversold flight to Cleveland, and a steady rain that soaked our bags when we finally arrived at 12:30 a.m. So we expected to check in, schlep through an empty lobby and generally feel lonely and tired. We were pleasantly surprised when the airport shuttle driver cheerfully picked us up at Hopkins and delivered us to the Marriott lobby, where, we were shocked to see, the place was jumpin'. Really. Flat-screen TVs were tuned to the various versions of ESPN. A guy in pajama pants played pool at a table near a reading area. Couples and groups of business travelers sat at tables in the bar, relaxed and laughing and seemingly mindless of the time. The front desk staffer asked us if we needed anything before we turned in for the night. And the $20 million renovation on this property gave each of the 366 guest rooms hardwood floor entries, supersoft king beds with plush linens, 42-inch plasma TVs and granite bathroom counters. This doesn't even include AMP 150. The lobby's restaurant opened in July 2010 under a 30-year-old chef who planted a quarter-acre garden behind the Marriott's parking lot to flavor his simple and fresh small-plate menu. We'll give AMP 150 its own review; for now, it's fair to say that of all of the restaurants we've dined at in Cleveland, this one was the best, and our $45 dinner tab (without wine) for two was amazingly low for the quantity and quality of the food. We'd skip staying downtown and pay the $99/night to stay here anytime.
