Midwest Living Review

Damaine Vonada
Excellent food, solicitous service, a stylish setting--this restaurant in Cincy's Mariemeont neighborhood delivers a singular dining experience.

Because the shrubbery surrounding its dining patio practically conceals Quarter Bistro from the street, you might have trouble finding it. But the food at this hidden gem is worth the hunt and the 10-mile drive from downtown Cincinnati to Mariemont, a pleasant enclave of shady streets and Tudor architecture designed as a model community in the 1920s. Today, Mariemont is a National Historic Landmark with a lively village square where The Quarter Bistro sits next door to an old-fashioned movie theater -- perfect for dinner and a movie nights. But the restaurant's Hollywood-esque decor of red walls, curvaceous arches, and mirrors accented by white lights is glam enough for special suppers for two. Open only for dinner, the bistro has an eclectic menu as distinctive as its style. Its cuisine creatively combines American favorites like sausage-pepperoni pizza ($11) and a hearty Angus beef burger ($12) with more sophisticated options such as refreshing watermelon gazpacho ($7); handmade angel hair pasta ($19, cooked to al dente perfection and immersed in cream sauce); and mocha creme brulee, a silken circle of rich custard accompanied by a cinnamon-dusted beignet ($7). Though the cuisine changes seasonally, the satisfying signature dish -- braised, 18-hour short ribs ($25) -- is available year-round. Not sure what to order? No problem. The waitstaff is polite, attentive and knowledgeable about everything on the menu.
