Midwest Living Review

Judi Ketteler
You'll dig the 1950s charm and the milk shakes (not the service) at this downtown diner.

Originally opened in 1956, Hathaway's Diner in the Carew Tower still feels like it belongs in another decade. It was recently remodeled, but the new owner only made cosmetic changes (swapping the mauve color scheme for black, white and aqua) because he knows one of the place's real strengths is its vintage charm. There are two huge counters in the middle of the diner and tables around the perimeter. Pictures of the Carew Tower in its heyday line the walls. This used to be THE place to come to refuel in the midst of a day of shopping. It's still a popular destination with downtown workers and those looking for some retro kitsch. We love the decor and history of the place. We saw the service described as no-nonsense -- and that's accurate. The servers wear 50s-like uniforms, and a few of the women have worked here for more than 30 years. The food is fine. The tuna melt ($7.95) is straightforward, and the fries are so-so. The chocolate milk shake -- the original recipe from 1956 -- may, however, be worth the trip. It's creamy, rich and simply delicious.
