Midwest Living Review

Kendra Williams
Interactive exhibits in the new gallery capture football's intensity and fans' interest.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame is one of those places that die-hard football fans put on their bucket lists. For Midwesterners especially, just the idea of plugging "George Halas Drive" into the GPS is a thrill. And there are definitely some cool experiences to enjoy here. The Hall of Fame Gallery has bronze-sculpted busts of the men who have become legends in this game, and it's cool to see those and snap some pictures. The Lamar Hunt Super Bowl Gallery has touch screens allowing visitors to design a Super Bowl ring, which is fun for fans whose teams have not yet earned one. Seeing the Vince Lombardi Trophy, given to the winner of each Super Bowl, is fun, too. But since we've also been to Cooperstown, New York, site of the Baseball Hall of Fame, we can't help but compare the two experiences. Going to Cooperstown is a pilgrimage. You wind your way over rural country roads to land in an idyllic, one-stoplight town where America's pastime is enshrined. It's very much a journey. Going to Canton is about buzzing down the interstate, hopping off, and realizing you can see every part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in two hours and walk away feeling, "Is that it?" The exhibits are heavy on helmets, uniforms and TV footage; they show little memorabilia from the players and coaches, like ticket stubs, programs or handwritten letters. The HOF is planning a renovation to coincide with its 50th anniversary, and we hope that project will give the visitor experience a boost. The people who come for that once-in-a-lifetime visit deserve it. Admission charged.
