Midwest Living Review

Wake to the sound of a rooster crowing at this charming farm B&B, where the Swedish pancakes are made with farm-fresh eggs.

Volden Farm is casual, rustic and perfect in its imperfections. Hostess JoAnne Wold loves welcoming people to her home and sharing her zest for the farm life with her guests. Everything in the home tells a story: From the beds to the claw-foot bathtub to the breakfast plates to the little jar that holds sugar cubes for coffee, most items are either antiques, family heirlooms or scavenged from the area and refurbished, giving Volden Farm a strong sense of place in the North Dakota prairie. The main house is decorated with local reclaimed materials, adding both patina and texture to the space: wood floors reclaimed from an old schoolhouse, a fireplace made of local stones, a barnwood bathroom vanity that still has the spots where the horses gnawed on the wood. The two guest rooms are cozy and comfortable, although the beds are somewhat stiff. The guest rooms share a bathroom. The farm rooster greets guests in the morning, and breakfasts have a Scandinavian flavor with Swedish pancakes or Danish ableskivers, Norwegian cheese and flatbread, and farm-fresh eggs. With the delicious breakfasts, the peaceful landscape and the warm hospitality, it's no wonder many guests return to Volden Farm.
